Recent Sightings

On April 17th we set sail with clear skies and high hopes. We traveled out into the Strait, doing a large loop infront of Nanaimo scanning the waters. We made a stop at Entrance Island to see all the Stellar Sea Lions, and a few California Sea Lions. After leaving we went back into the Strait, heading towards the shores of Vancouver.

After traveling south through the Strait we passed through Active Pass and headed through the Gulf Islands to the East side of Sidney Island. There we found our 10 Orcas, the T124A’s and the T124D’s.

What a gorgeous day! It was a little breezy but the sun was shining and the Salish Sea was teaming with life. We found sea lions, seals, a humpback whale, and orca!

April 11th was a beautiful day out in the water and we were lucky enough to find Killer Whales at Neck Point!

Transient Killer Whale pods can join up like this to hunt together and socialize. It also gives the opportunity for a male and female of different pods to mate.

This was a great trip out on the water where we saw plenty of wildlife including Bald eagles, sea lions, seals, and finished the trip off with the T018’s. The T018’s are a pod of 4 consisting of three generations!

It’s been awhile! After a long winter our crew was ecstatic to get back out on the water and explore our backyard in search of whales and other wildlife. Naturalist Val and Captain Rodrigo headed south into the Strait of Georgia and it didn’t take them too long to find killer whales!

And not just any killer whalse, they found the infamous “Chainsaw” (T063)! This adult male orca is easy to recognize because of his large, chainsaw-like dorsal fin. We quite often see him in the spring on our whale watching tours.

Cascadia and Kula set off at 12pm from downtown Nanaimo to search for whales in the Salish Sea and boy did they find whales! It was a bit breezy to start, but that didn’t stop our crew from spotting spout after spout on the horzion. Humpback whales were everywhere!

It was humpback soup out on the water on the 26th of September! We saw 7 humpbacks; Heather and Neowise, Raptor and Harpy, Snoopy, Sherwina, and one unknown. Not only did we get to see so many humpbacks but we also saw seals, sea lions and more in the Strait of Georgia!

September 22nd was a cloudy and calm day. We headed out on our semi-covered boat, Kula in search of whales and we found Zigzag near Valdes Island! Zigzag was doing lots of deep dives and flukes. After hanging with Zigzag for a while we found Divot and Strike near Galiano Island. We stuck with them for a little while since they weren’t that active and we found Zigzag again who was travelling south.

Today our boats headed out into the strait searching for some whales. We found Heather and her calf Neowise in almost the same spot as the day before. There was a third humpback near by feeding and hanging out near our boats, but Neowise was the centre of the show, as usual.

We found Heather (BCY0160) and her calf Neowise hanging out in the Strait of Georgia not too far from home today. We also encountered the T60’s traveling past the south end of Prevost and Salt Spring islands.

On the 19th we left the harbour without any sightings for the day, but luckily for us the smoke had cleared and there wasn’t any fog so the visibility on the water was good. We managed to find a mother calf pair of humpback whales just south of Gabriola Reef! We identified these two animals as Kappa (BCX0158) and her calf from this year. Her calf is easy to recognize due to its skin condition and pointy white dorsal. We saw this pair on September 11th so their unique markings are fresh in our memories!

It was a foggy day when we left Nanaimo Harbour, but we didn’t let that stop us! We ended up finding both transient orca (The T065Bs and the T123s) and two humpback whales (Anvil and Graze) in the Strait of Georgia!

On September 16th, we found two humpback whales that were making a scene! It was Split Fluke and her 2018 calf Valiant! These 2 were pec slapping and diving as the Orcas headed past them. At this point the orcas were disappearing into the smokey haze around us. Occasionally a small black fin could be made out in the distance but it was evident that the SRKW’s had places to be, hopefully places full of salmon.

On September 11th, after a bit of a search, we located a humpback whale and her calf travelling off of Galiano Island in the Strait of Georgia. This mother was identified by her dorsal fin and fluke as Kappa (BCX0158) in the Keta Coastal Conservation humpback whale catalogue (www.ketacoastalconservation.org).

On September 10th we had a very exciting encounter - we had a T-party with the T037A’s and the T100’s! After leaving the T-party, we also spotted two humpbacks nicknamed Fader (BCY0195) and Split Fluke (BCX1068) travelling through the Strait of Georgia.
